Summer Tire Advice for Hot Roads

Noticed more tire remains on the side of the road lately? As the weather warms up, tires warm up with it, making them much more prone to damage, and ultimately, blowouts.

Summer Tire AdvicePrevent your tires from overheating and possibly popping by following these tips:

  • Be sure to check your tire inflation regularly, attempting to meet the specific standard listed in your owner’s manual.
  • Whenever you do tire inflation checks, wait until the car has cooled off for a few hours.
  • Check your tires monthly, or more frequently in the summer if you drive very often.
  • Monitor how the tire pressure seems to be changing over time; if one tire is much lower than the others every time you check, it may be punctured
  • Buy a good quality tire gauge to be sure you’re getting the right readings every time.
  • Lastly, always take your vehicle in for regular maintenance, and if something seems wrong with your tires, seek professional aid.

For that “Just in Case” Moment – How to Change a Tire

In a society where most drivers have some sort of roadside assistance membership, many people no longer know how to change a flat tire. However, in case of an emergency, here are some tire changing steps to remember.

  1. How to change a tirePull Over – find a safe flat area (if you are on the expressway, take the nearest exit), enable your parking brake, and turn on your hazard lights. For added safety, put a rock or other heavy object ahead of a front and rear tire.
  2. Get your materials – Retrieve the spare tire, wrench, and car jack.
  3. Use the wrench to loosen the lug nuts by turning counter-clockwise (to the left).
  4. Place the carjack under a metal portion of the car and lift the vehicle off of the ground.
  5. Remove the lug nuts manually and remove the damaged tire.
  6. Put the spare tire on the car – line up the lug nut posts and lightly screw on the lug nuts manually.
  7. Lower the car back to the pavement with the car jack.
  8. Using the wrench, tighten the lug nuts by turning to the right.
  9. Remove the car jack and place spare tire, car jack, and wrench back in the car.
  10. Visit a service station so a professional can examine/repair the damaged tire.
