Winter Driving Tips

Winter Driving TipsHere in West Virginia, the winters can be pretty harsh. Knowing how to drive safely in the winter weather is an absolute necessity. Here are a few winter driving tips to keep you on the road.

  • Check your tires. Make sure your tires have adequate depth and you may want to consider switching to snow tires since our roads are regularly covered in snow.
  • Check your windshield wipers. Being able to see is paramount to driving safely. If your windshield wipers can’t clear the snow and ice off your windshield, you’ll be stopped in your tracks. Think about using wiper blades specifically designed for snow. Also apply a water-shedding material to the outside of your window to help keep it clear and switch to anti-icing washer fluid.
  • Use the air conditioner. Air conditioning is not just for cooling down your car. It also removes moisture from the air and helps keep your windshield clear. You can still set the temperature to “warm.”
  • Use you brakes. When roads are wet or snowy, brake earlier and keep more space between you and the car in front of you. If you hit a slick spot and start to skid, stomp on your brakes (as long as you have anti-lock brakes) and look and steer in the direction you want to go.

If you need any help getting your car ready for the winter, give our friendly service department here at Lewis Nissan a call and we’ll get you all set. Make sure you pass on these winter driving tips to your family and friends!

West Virginia’s Safety Laws

It’s always good to have a refresher on the safety laws, so here are a few reminders!

-All drivers must wear a seat belt in the front and passengers under the age of 18 in back must wear one. Violators can be fined up to $25.00.

Cell Phones and Texting:

-Any driver who is under the age of 18 that holds wither a learner’s permit or an intermediate license are banned from all cell phone usage while driving. All drivers, regardless of age, are not permitted to use a hand-held cell phone.

-Any driver who is under the age of 18 that holds either a learner’s permit or an intermediate license are banned from texting while driving.

-Every vehicle must have two headlights in the front, one on each side.

– Every motor vehicle must use headlights from sunset to sunrise, and when lighting is poor enough that you can’t see other drivers or vehicles that are within 500 feet.

-If your windshield wipers are in use, your headlights must be on.

There are some good safety reminders! Make sure you follow them so you don’t get a ticket!

Nissan Takes Shape to Silicon Valley

Nissan has established a research center in the heart of Silicon Valley. Company leaders say the plan to partner with other companies to research and develop the best and most advanced technology possible.

Carla Bailo said that Silicon Valley is where everything is happening so that is where Nissan needs to be. There is a lot of intelligence that resides in Silicon Valley.

The new facility is a part of Nissan’s global plan to expand research and development outside of Japan into key local markets. The team in Silicon Valley will work with the team in Japan who is working on developing autonomous driving vehicles, or a car that can drive itself.

Researchers will also look for ways to connect the car with the internet, existing infrastructure, and other self-driving cars. Nissan will also go further into researching the Human Machine Interface so that autonomous cars are connected and better interact with people.

Nissan Leaf Gets New Bose Sound System

While the Nissan Leaf doesn’t compare to the thumping sound systems famous rappers or celebrities have, they are bringing in a stereo that is in line with the car’s energy efficient approach.

Nissan worked with Bose to develop a system that cuts energy use in half while it increases the sound quality. The Leaf will be bumpin’ on the inside while still be quiet on the outside.

Brendan Jones, Nissan director of EV marketing, said “Early adopters of electric vehicles were thrilled to have a zero-emissions vehicle and now that we’re expanding the market and it matures, many customers are asking for more amenities in their EV”. Mr. Jones also said “We wanted to be able to give them a premium sound system and be conscientious about the amount of energy required to do so”.

Brandon Westly, president of the Bose Automotive System Division, was quoted saying “The Bose Energy Efficient Series sound system delivers on all its promise for LEAF owners. It’s remarkably efficient-without conceding on great musical performance”. He also stated “This system demonstrates the unmatched advancements we’ve achieved in producing highly efficient audio technology in vehicles”.

Nissan is now looking to take their best selling electric vehicle and trick it out. One amenity at a time, the Leaf will become more like any other car and help the environment. What more could you want from a car?

Nissan Expands Next Generation of Titans

The Nissan Titan has not seen many changes since it’s been on the market for a decade. The 2015 Titan could make the truck more of a contender in the full-size truck market. The Ford F-150 is a serious competitor for the truck.

One of the vice presidents for Nissan North America optimistically predicted a 460 percent boost in sales for the redesigned pickup.  Pierre Loing, vice president of product and advanced planning and strategy for Nissan North America Inc was quoted saying, “Reaching 100,000 is certainly possible. We believe there might be a recipe to grab some of this huge segment”.

The full-size pickup market is the most profitable segment for the Detroit 3. Nissan is taking another shot in this market because sales for Chevrolet, Ford, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan reached almost 1.6 million units. There is a lot of ground that could be taken from its competitors. Sales for the Titan have been small compared to the Ford F-150, which is the number 1 selling vehicle.

To gain some of the market back, Nissan plans to add a regular cab model to the extended cab and crew cab. The pricing structure will also see some changes. Currently the Titan is more of a premium lifestyle pickup, they will offer lower-priced models with the redesign.

Nissan plans to focus on fuel economy as part of the redesign as well. Materials that will reduce weight and advanced technology will be utilized as well.

Mr. Loing stated that it will be hard to grab the attention of pickup intenders. He was quoted saying “It is domestic driven with a high loyalty to domestic products. So the question is, ‘Why bother?’ It is still a huge segment. Whether it is through build quality, equipment, some price advantage, you name it, it may work. We will try again.”

Nissan announces NISMO expansion

Nissan is working to turn its Nismo line into a legitimate sub-brand.

Nissan plans to model its performance after the Mercedes-Benz’s AMG and Lexus’ F-Sport line. They plane to make a noticeable increase in performance and obtain a more sporty suspension so it is easier to handle. Nissan wants to differentiate their product from their competitors and make the brand more appealing to you and me.

Nissan is investigating a line of low-volume vehicles and the first of which being the Juke Nismo. The Juke Nismo is expected to launch next year.

There is no word yet which other models will be a part of the Nismo expansion. Nissan executives have stated that in order for a vehicle to join the Nismo brand, they would have to meet certain criteria. Nissan plans to announce those in early 2013.

For more information on the Juke Nismo and when you can buy one, check out Lewis Nissan for all the details.

The Nissan Juke NISMO

At the 2012 Paris Motor show that took place last week Nissan its newest variant of the Nissan Juke, the Nissan Juke NISMO. With most NISMO upgrades, you normally can expect some sports upgrades such as spoilers, body kits, leather interior with NISMO stitching, and most of all a power upgrade to the engine. But with the Nissan Juke NISMO we got most of that, the thing that was most lacking was the thing we all want the most. The engine upgrade.

Don’t get discouraged, there was a slight power increase in the sporty crossover, it now gets 197 horsepower up from the original 187 horsepower and 184 Lb.-Ft. of Torque; but that’s about it. Everything else seems to be apart of the appearance makeover. The interior gets a facelift and now is garnished in plenty of black suede and red stitching of NISMO that cover much of the crossover including the new bucket seats. The exterior gets a similar appearance treatment with a rear spoiler to help with downforce, a new more “mean” front spoiler to make the car look more aggressive. Though with only 10 horsepower added its hard to believe the Nissan Juke NISMO being any more aggressive than the Nissan Leaf.

That being said here is a nice video detailing the new Juke Variant. We can expect these to hit the European market first, then Japan, ending with the U.S., maybe by the time they get here they will add a few more horsies to the Nissan Juke NISMO.
